STORY
Our club meets every Thursday at noon in the Redbud Courtyard of the Simmons Center for lunch, fun & fellowship! The first meeting of the month is reserved for our business meeting; the members take turns providing programs for the remaining meetings. Usually, local individuals or group representatives are invited to bring us a 15-20 minute presentation regarding something of interest happening in our community.
Lions Club International is a service organization whose main philanthropic service is the prevention of blindness. This challenge was originally given to the organization by Helen Keller through a speech given to businessmen in Chicago, Illinois.
Our local club pays for eye exams and glasses, when appropriate, for individuals (primarily children) who demonstrate financial need and whose prescription eye care is not covered by other insurance or government assistance programs. For the past few years, we have budgeted and spent approximately $9,000 annually providing these services. Additionally, we have been providing $2,000 scholarships each to a male and female Duncan High School senior and $1,000 each to a male and female Red River Technology student to assist them in furthering their educations. We also contribute to several local charities yearly including Kaleidoscope, Project Graduation, the Stephens County Christmas Dinner, scouting and other worthwhile organizations and their causes.
All of these expenditures are paid through our activities fund. We have two fundraisers annually. We sponsor the annual carnival which is held in Fuqua Park each May. Our main fundraiser, of course, is the annual Duncan Noon Lions Club Open Rodeo held at the Claud Gill Arena south of the fairgrounds. All of our members contribute time and energy in helping us put on this event...in addition, we are assisted by the Lucky Circle girl’s social club, the Duncan FFA chapter, and several individuals from throughout the area.
